Mission, Vision, Values

Our vision is for prisoners to be restored to society as well-equipped and faithful people of God.

MISSION

We are a holistic Christian ministry which aims to share God’s hope and purpose with prisoners and former prisoners.

We do this by:

  1. Visiting prisons to proclaim the gospel and provide for basic material need;
  2. Providing community for former prisoners in our halfway home and through local peer support networks;
  3. Teaching key life and employment skills, nurturing character, encouraging repentance and change, discipling and mentoring;
  4. Supporting former prisoners in the process of reconciliation with their families, establishing sustainable livelihoods for themselves and becoming servant-leaders of their communities; and
  5. Engaging in policy dialogue and reform of the criminal justice and prison systems.

VALUES

In prayer, humility and faith, we recognise our utter dependence on God in all we do. Yet, with God’s help, we strive to achieve excellence and success in our work.

We are inspired and compelled to serve in prison work by the love of Jesus. We believe in the intrinsic value of every human person and that no life is beyond hope.

Our ultimate aim is to display the just and compassionate character of God in everything we do and to share with others the wonderful news of the Gospel. We believe the Gospel has unique power to transform lives and restore relationships, and that it speaks to every aspect of life and society.

We offer our energies and resources to people of every faith and background.   We are committed to openness, transparency and accountability in our work. We believe that our service should involve no element of compulsion or manipulation.

We value sustainability and enterprise, both for Philemon as an organisation, and in aiming to support former prisoners into leading sustainable and enterprising lives in their home communities.
